GRR: Jacksonville
It remains very tight in Florida's high school league after this week's action.
Key Biscayne got a bit of a surprise at Wellington. Cardinal Gibbons stepped into the fray. (We had Gibbons winning their opener but that was an error based on reporting from other sources—Okapi won that game 28-10). And Jacksonville returned to winning ways.
The Jacksonville Wolverines came somewhat out of nowhere to win the Florida State high school championship in 2019, and were in a position to challenge for another state title this year, but that’s just the start of the story.
It remains a question as to who will finish the season on top in Florida, but we're starting to get an idea.
OkapiWins over Key Biscayne, Naples, and, this past weekend, Cardinal Gibbons, Okapi is now 3-0. It was a tight one against Cardinal Gibbons (see more about that below.)
Okapi faces a stern test against a pretty useful Boynton Beach side in two weeks.
OK so what to make of the Florida high school season.
Preseason games seemed to vault some teams into the mix, and then when the league stared, there was trouble.
Defending champs Jacksonville started off shakily with a preseason loss to Georgia’s Phoenix Alpharetta, but then has gone from strength to strength.
Georgia HS team Phoenix Alpharetta opened up its season with an impressive road shutout win over defending Florida champs the Jacksonville Wolverines.
