Rugby ramps up in high school 7s this weekend, with Utah Youth Rugby kicking off its fall season.
While some teams in Utah have seen a bit of a slowdown in signups as some parents are wary of allowing their kids playing time during the COVID-19 pandemic, UYR's campaign of pointing out how extensive screen time is bad for kids has helped get eager kids back on the field.
Utah Youth Rugby will start its fall 7s in three days now that Salt Lake County has opened up for sports activities.
With the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City now able to rent out is fields, UYR will be able to hold tournaments for boys and girls through the fall. The first tournament will be this Saturday, September 19.
High School rugby is still divided into single-school and club categories.
Herriman won the Utah Youth Rugby Boys Varsity fall 7s competition, taking the final two tournaments of the season.
Herriman had encountered plenty of trouble with United this fall, losing the final of the first tournament of the fall series to their rivals from Alpine, before edging United in the second tournament. It came down to the final of Round 3, and Herriman was 21-17.
Utah Youth Rugby's fall HS 7s season comes down to this weekend and there's plenty on the line.
United Boys won the opening tournament, beating Herriman 28-24 in the final. Herriman responded last week, beating United 24-21 in the final.
So this week's tournament decides who's on top.
