As details about the DI fall championship develop, one thing is for certain: A new team will represent the Midwest this year. Northern Iowa led the region for years, but it’s time for either Minnesota or Iowa State to head to nationals.
Last year, Iowa State and Northern Iowa kicked off the DI Midwest season with a single-digit decision, which went to longtime regional champ UNI. On Saturday, the Cyclones more than closed the gap and overcame Northern Iowa 36-5.
St. Edward won two Midwest Boys HS championships Sunday, and Royal Irish did what was expected in the Midwest championship tournament in Elkart, Ind. Sunday.
Royal Irish won the multi-school club bracket with a 62-17 defeat of Fishers Sunday. The Indianapolis team finished the two-day, three-game tournament with 138 points for and 22 against.
A big weekend awaits in girls high school rugby, as the Midwest Championship is poised to play out in Elkhart, Ind. Division I will bring some of the region’s best teams together, while Division II allows up-and-coming teams to share in the competitive weekend.
Black Katts throughout the Midwest were celebrating big wins last weekend, as the DII powerhouse won its 8th consecutive Foolsfest title. The win was a testament to Winona’s depth, as the school had lent five of its best players to the Minnesota U24s for the Midwest LAU tournament in Davenport, Iowa.
