BERKELEY – California beat Arizona State, 45-5, to win its third straight PAC 7s Rugby Championship Sunday on Witter Rugby Field. The Golden Bears (15-1) also defeated Utah, 34-0, in the semifinals to exit the 11-team, 33-match event unbeaten with the tourney’s most points (226) and tries (38), and fewest points allowed (10 on two tries).
Cal and UCLA ran the table in pool games at the PAC 7s Rugby Championship Saturday at Witter Rugby Field, setting up a potential clash between the rivals.
Arizona State finished the day 3-1, and Utah also finished 3-1 to finish second in pool play to join UCLA and Cal in the semis.
College Rugby has certainly received a boost since groups of teams have aligned themselves with established football conferences.
The University of California will host a fall rugby 7s event for the first time when they stage the PAC Rugby 7s Championships.
The games will be held at Witter Rugby Field - Cal's rugby home - and will start Saturday morning, November 8. The tournament will cover two days.
