It's down to the wire on the Southern California Boys HS Varsity Red competition, as playoff berths hang in the balance.
Last week, La Costa Canyon was able to hold on to beat Cathedral. LCC went up early, fell behind 14-13 at the break, and then pulled away 37-28 late in the game.
Torrey Pines defeated Del Norte, and so the standings now look like this:

La Costa Canyon will be hoping not to run into the penalty issues they faced against Cathedral. This Friday LCC takes on St. Augustine. The winner of that game will go into the semifinals. Torrey Pines is done for the regular season and has to wait for this game's outcome. (See picture below from Kevin Mummau of the Cathedral and LCC captains shaking hands post-match - a lot of respect between those teams.
If LCC wins, then LCC is undefeated and wins the San Diego Conference, with Torrey Pines 2nd. However, if St. Augustine wins, then things could get dicey.
If the Saints win, they will get into the playoffs because event a four-point victory gives St. Augustine 25 points, one better than Torrey Pines. So then it's up to LCC to get bonus points. Two bonus points (one for a close loss and one for four tries) would be enough to get LCC into the playoffs. One bonus point would likely be good enough, as well.
If the two teams tie, the LCC is in for sure, and St. Augustine would lose out to Torrey Pines.
Meanwhile, it's all much simpler in Los Angeles, where St. John Bosco has led throughout the season, and Mira Costa has secured second. Do not expect that to change.
