On Day One of the SLUH All-Catholic tournament, we saw some drama.
Two games were very, very close, as St. Thomas Aquinas edged Notre Dame de la Salette 7-0 in a game where both teams had chances.
Later on, St. Xavier needed all they had to beat SLUH 12-11.
In a result that was a bit of a surprise in how close it was, Gonzaga held off St. Ignatius of Cleveland in Brooklyn, Ohio Saturday.
This was a physically punishing match and both teams saw injuries to key players—Gonzaga losing a prop and a flanker and Ignatius losing their sophomore flyhalf with a very high ceiling in Hank McGowan.
St. Ignatius of Cleveland hosts Gonzaga of Washington DC Saturday in Ohio and this is one of the better rivalries in IS rugby.
The marquee game for this week is probably Gonzaga at St. Ignatius.
This is a longtime rivalry where each team provides the other with one of their biggest challenges in the regular season.
Xavier HS of NY defeated Connecticut-based Aspetuck over the weekend in a well-played clash of two teams with national championship aspirations.
Both Xavier's 1st and 2nd sides took wins on St. Patrick’s Day. Junior lock Hanoi Nelson, who scored Xavier’s first A-side try, described the victory over Aspetuck best, saying “we came out explosive and we didn’t let up.”
