College Women
This weekend is a big one for senior 7s teams, as the Pacific Coast, Midwest, and Red River name their representatives to the women’s Club 7s National Championship. Many collegians – and even some high schoolers – are boosting these berth-seeking teams, and it’ll be great to see those younger players perform on the senior stage this Aug. 8-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Every summer, the opportunities for upward-aspiring athletes grow, and the Northeast Academy’s addition of a women’s program is another example of such. Earlier this week, the USA Rugby-sanctioned National Development Academy released its inaugural roster of 28 women, about half of which are college-aged and younger.
Southern California named its two representatives to the Women’s Club 7s National Championship, and two very different sides are heading to Iowa. Defending champion San Diego Surfers will be looking for its third title and boasts a nice mix of hometown talent with players currently training at the Chula Vista OTC.
California (and UN Reno) hosted its first-ever all-star assembly, giving women from DII Southern California and West Coast conference the opportunity to train and play at a higher level.
