GRR: Utah Youth Rugby
Two of the top teams in Utah met up this past weekend with LCA beating Herriman 31-22.
Herriman came in a bit beat up, with a few injuries. They also were without their two captains, one with injury and one (Ryker Syddall) with at the Rosslyn Park School Sevens in the UK with the Rebel Rugby Academy.
Utah Youth Rugby is a HS league to keep an eye on as there seems to be a bit of a changing of the guard.
Cavemen Rugby have logged a nicely-taken win over East HS over the past weekend and now look to follow that up against a physically imposing Highland side.
Herriman and East, the only single school programs in Utah's combined Tier 1, met in an early season match after getting their feet wet at the Puriri Invitational last week.
Defending state champion East was looking to establish itself after an uneven showing in that warmup tournament, while Herriman was looking to continue its momentum from a strong start.
Your big winners coming out of the Puriri Tournament seem to be Herriman and Layton Christian Academy.
Those two teams are certainly two of the major state contenders this year, along with defending state champs East HS. While East faltered a little, it's important to remember that the Puriri Tournament, while competitive, is still a warmup tournament.
Layton Christian Academy won the Utah Youth Rugby boys 7s earlier this month, overcoming a strong field off opposition.
LCA has struggled with numbers because it's football season, said Head Coach Tongia Vaitaki. "But we were able to pull it off with the few numbers we got."
