GRR: Gregory the Great
Gregory the Great won the Rugby PA Boys D1 title, beating St. Joe's Prep over the weekend with an exciting finish between two heated rivals.
These two teams played earlier in the season, with St. Joseph's winning 40-33. So it was no surprise that this game was close as well.
With a vocal group of fans from each team, this was a game with a loud atmosphere.
In an intriguing non-conference boys high school rugby matchup, the Vienna rugby team defeated the Gregory the Great Academy (GGA) with a final score of 21-14 Saturday.
Gregory the Great won their second state championship in the last three years, defeating Berks 27-10 in Sunday's Rugby Pennsylvania final.
GGA held a very potent Berks attack in check.
The weather played havoc with plenty of rugby this weekend, including the Rugby PA games.
Sunday's game between Berks and Conestoga didn't survive the rain. But the big clash between LaSalle and Gregory the Great did get played.
Both teams came into the matchup 3-0 and looking for the top seed in the playoffs.
Pennsylvania's league season opened up with a series of relatively lopsided results.
LaSalle impressed with a 43-10 win over Malvern Prep; Berks won big over West Shore 46-0; St. Joe's Prep won 43-5 over Doylestown.
The closest game was certainly Conestoga's 22-20 edging of defending state champs Gregory the Great.
