GRR: College Men
March is almost half over and it’s time to start thinking about DIAA playoffs.
That’s right, even though it’s more than a month before we really start worrying about national playoffs, some scenarios are already clearing up. Here’s what we know:
With their 41-28 defeat of Stanford, Chico State is now firmly in 2nd place in the Pacific West DIAA Conference, and have UC Davis in their sights.
Davis, of course, won the first-round meeting between the two teams 18-15, and that might have set the tone for Chico State’s season. But they have the playoffs in April to redeem themselves, and they think they can.
USA Rugby has 24 slots to fill in their Men’s College 7s Championships, and deciding who gets to fill those slots will be a tough job.
The California Conference may well be all wrapped up for the St. Mary’s Gaels, but 2nd place isn’t a bad place to be, and San Diego State might well end up there.
After winning a wild one 59-44 over Santa Clara, the Aztecs are now 2-1 and only have their April 12 clash with Cal Poly left on the docket (Cal Poly is 1-1 and plays 0-2 UC Santa Barbara this Friday).
Colorado State won a must-win game in the West DIA conference as the Rams beat previously-undefeated Air Force 30-5.
The victory ensured that CSU stays in the hunt for the conference title, a goal tat would likely have been out of their reach had they lost.
