GRR: College Men
Saturday’s BYU v St. Mary’s game was clearly of interest to anyone trying to track the best in men’s DI college rugby.
The score - 30-29 for BYU - was clearly an indication of how close these two programs can be. But it’s also worth considering that BYU led 27-15 60 minutes into the game, and looked like they could control things from there. They didn’t.
Alabama set down something of a market this past weekend with a win at the Moosemen 7s in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Furman University logged a notable result Saturday in a non-conference game, as the DII program tied top DI team Indiana 41-41.
The game was a scrimmage and both teams subbed liberally, but this same meeting two years ago resulted in an 88-5 result for IU. So the improvement, following on a Furman victory over a University of South Carolina squad, is noticeable.
UC Davis tightened its grip on the Pacific Western Conference with a 68-19 defeat of Stanford Saturday.
Stanford went into the game 2-0-1 but were cast aside summarily by the defending DIAA champ Aggies. UC Davis is now 4-0.
Cal State Long Beach sits clear atop the Gold Coast after an impressive 72-12 defeat of Grand Canyon University Saturday.
GCU was hit with some injuries but still fielded a big, powerful forward pack. Battling the heat of an Arizona February afternoon the Long Beach 49ers worked the ball wide as much as possible, and the tactic worked nicely.
