In 2013 the Virginia Girls All-Stars scored a total of 17 points at the Rugby Challenge Cup in Pittsburgh; after graduating some top-notch players, Virginia might have been forgiven for thinking things would be worse this year.
The Virginia Girls All-Star team won the Regional All-Star Tournament Challenge Cup in Pittsburgh, Pa. Sunday in a tough final against Empire/NJ.
Virginis edged the New York / New Jersey combined side 6-0 with two penalty goals from wing Madison Pennell of West Springfield, HS. Virginia No. 8 Elizabeth Wilson, also of West Springfield, was the tournament MVP.
The Southern California girls all-star team capped off a superb weekend, derating Washington 27-10 in the final of the Great Northwest Challenge in Portland, Ore. Sunday.
Washington had been something of a surprise arrival in the final after they came back form a 12-0 deficit to beat Northern California 14-12, kicking the winning conversion with almost no time left.
Southern California’s girls select side was outstanding in Saturday play in the Great Northwest Challenge.
With good teamwork from the forwards and with freshman fullback Lilly Durbin torching defenses every time they left her some space, the Griffins defeated Washington handily and crushed a combined NorCal/Oregon side.
