GRR: St. Thomas Aquinas
Oklahoma’s HS league has been on essentially dominated by Union HS in recent years, but the competition is getting better.
Leading the way is Bixby, which started their season last week with a 59-5 win over Bartlesville. Thursday they tied Yukon, but that was just a curtain-raiser to this weekend’s clash with visiting St. Thomas Aquinas from the Kansas City area.
Saint Thomas Aquinas won its 9th consecutive Kansas state championships Saturday, defeating the Kansas City Cougars 57-12 in the final.
STA continues to play well and show depth, with their JV team winning the Tier 3 title with wins over Garden City and Saint James Academy.
The Kansas City Jr. Blues won the Heart of America Tournament in what was a somewhat strange finish.
St. Thomas Aquinas is hosting the 2016 Heart of America Classic this weekend, with 12 well-regarded HS teams from around the country.
Aquinas is on a role, having shown well at tournaments in Oklahoma and Lindenwood University, and having beaten their arch rivals, KC Jr. Blues, in a recent game.
Aquinas, along with the Blues, will field two teams in the HOA.
St. Thomas Aquinas of Kansas defeated their longtime cross-border rivals Kansas City Junior Blues 15-0 Saturday in wet, unpleasant conditions.
Aquinas struggled to get out of their own way a little bit in the first half, and entered the break up 3-0 thanks to a penalty goal from Sam Gasparovich. But, said Head Coach Tim Kluempers, it could have been more.
