Liberty opened the Rugby Washington HS season with a 15-10 defeat of Budd Bay at Budd Bay.

For Liberty, it was a gratifying win, albeit one that came about eight months too late.

Liberty was 10-2 in Rugby Washington league and playoff competition, but those two losses - one in the regular season and one in the state final - came against Budd Bay.

In another rain-soaked game, the San Diego Mustangs shut out the Eastside Lions of Washington state 19-0 in the second win of their two-game tour.

The Mustangs got starting scrumhalf James Downey back and his experience and ball handling showed an immediate improvement throughout the backline.

Jeanne Hansen Community Park in Snoqualmie Ridge, Wash. will be the venue for a two-day preseason festival for Rugby Washington HS teams dubbed the Cascade Clash.

Boys teams from DI, DII, JV, and 7th/8th grade will compete in a two-game festival to get the season started.
