GRR: Rugby Connecticut
Fairfield Prep and Greenwich HS will meet up this coming weekend in the Connecticut D1 state final after both won semifinals.
Greenwich put down a bit of a marker this weekend with an emphatic 26-0 shutout of Aspetuck in the rain.
Benja Thompson was outstanding at scrumhalf as the Cardinals ran their attack well while the entire team showed up defensively against an Aspetuck team that has plenty of weapons.
Even when the reserves came on the Greenwich defensive structure held.
This has been a strange season for rivals Staples and Greenwich.
The two teams ended up facing off three times and came awfully close to making it four. Their first meeting was a regular-season game which Staples won 28-16. Their next meeting was at HS National Championships, where Greenwich garnered revenge with a 30-12 result.
The Rugby NY Major League Rugby team hosted a Tri-State HS select side tournament over the weekend, and in the boys bracket Connecticut came out on top.
The tournament was held Sunday, June 12 at JFK Stadium in Hoboken, NJ in a semifinal-final format.
Greenwich HS will face off with Staples HS in the Rugby Connecticut Boys HS final Thursday night after both won semifinals over the past few days.
