Playoffs Loom For MAC

The Mid-Atlantic is coming down to the final three weeks before the playoffs and five teams are still strongly in the hunt for a conference title.

We'd say six teams, not five, but things aren't looking good for Ohio University. A little less than two weeks ago the University suspended every male fraternity on campus. Days later they suspended some sororities, and then the marching band (with a caveat that they still play at football games, of course) and then some sports clubs, including the rugby team. It is all a massive student activity purge to fight hazing.

The upshot then is that it's likely that the Ohio team may not be available for its remaining two games. That means that Dayton and IUPUI will get victories, and that's a boon to IUPUI.

High School Fall 7s Around The Country

Fall 7s in high school has been taking over the country, at least parts of the country, and has become an excellent way of recruiting young people to the game.

Every state does it differently; some have boys and girls and multiple divisions, some have just girls playing, and some make it just a low-intensity fun thing.

Here’s a look.

Utah

In a multiple-division championship, Herriman took the boys varsity title in a very close final against United.

United took the girls division in fairly dominant fashion. SLV Rhinos took boys D2 while South Davis looked very good in taking the girls D2.

MAC - Ohio Wins Close One, BGSU, WMU Roll

Of course once we at Goff Rugby Report profiled a team that might be on the rise, that team loses; so it was in the MAC where Louisville, which started strong last week, were pipped this week by Ohio.

OU ran out to a seemingly commanding 27-5 lead in the first half thanks to two tries from fullback Killan Mulkern, and one from No. 8 Garrett Easterly. Mulkern converted all three and added two penalty goals. Louisville got a try from center Vatuvei Pio, and then late in the first half scored two more tries to make it 27-19 at the break. Another Louisville try early in the second half made it a one-point game, but then Ohio tries from flanker Sean Meaney and Easterly again, with Mulkhern converting both, put Ohio up 41-26.

St. Joe's Impresses at Midwests

St. Joseph’s Academy made program history last weekend when it finished second at the girls high school Midwest Championship. After two solid victories on Saturday, the Ohio state champion faced perennial force Divine Savior Holy Angels (Wisc.) in the title round. Although St. Joe’s fell 24-17, the team played incredibly well and was highly commended by Dashers coach John Klein (read more).
