GRR: Northern California
In a preseason clash between two teams from different divisions, Granite Bay held off the Pleasanton Cavaliers 17-14 this past weekend.
Granite Bay is GRR #4 HS club and finished 2nd in Northern California's club division in 2015 (the region has since realigned). So losing by three for Pleasanton was not a bad result at all.
The Sacramento Valley Rugby Foundation's 32nd Annual Kick Off Tournament (KOT) was yet another successful start to the high school rugby season.
The Kickoff Tournament in Sacramento gets the HS and younger seasons going in Northern California.
The tournament, thanks to grants and donations, has been able to refurbish the fields at Cordova HS in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The fields are in excellent shape and as a result, despite some HS teams holding their own preseason events, the KOT has added teams from last year.
While most Northern California HS teams have been getting one or two preseason games in, or are waiting for the Kickoff Tournament in Sacramento, Pleasanton has been very busy, playing and beating five teams so far.
Several high school teams got some preseason work in at the Storer Classic last week at the UCLA campus.
Among the best-showers was defending NorCal club champs Danville, which defeated defending Utah single-school winners Snow Canyon 27-12 in a tough match that was 7-7 at halftime.
Danville went on to beat Santa Monica 17-3, and upcoming NorCal rivals Lamorinda 33-5.
