GRR: North Carolina
It's a busy weekend around the country in Boys HS rugby, as some leagues are getting started, and others heading into playoff-decision time; here's a look:
Charlotte Catholic made something of a statement by winning the Carolina Ruggerfest, defeating four impressive teams in the process.
Catholic shut out Moon Area out of Pennsylvania 15-0 for the opening win, and then defeated Wando, the leading team in South Carolina. Wando has not allowed a point in South Carolina league play, but Charlotte Catholic defeated them 26-14.
The Carolina Ruggerfest kicks off for its 13th incarnation this weekend, with almost 70 teams entered.
In past years, a 40-team tournament would have been considered a success, but this year brackets from Elementary School up to High School have seen an explosion of participants.
The Chapel Hill Highlands shut out the Charlotte Tigers last week and lead the NCYRA club league with a 2-0 record.
For the players and Coach Robert Joseph, it’s about time.
Top Ohio Boys HS program St. Edward is taking a trip to North Carolina to play three teams there.
