GRR: Lonestar
The Lonestar D1AA competition should be an interesting one to watch in the New Year.
Sam Houston State put aside their one conference loss of the season to win the Lonestar D1AA Conference over the weekend.
The Bearkats had dropped a close loss to Rice during the regular season and as a result came into the playoff weekend as the #2 seed. That didn't sit right with them.
Rice capped off an 8-0 season with a fairly solid 33-10 victory over University of Dallas Saturday.
The Owls take the #1 seed into the Lonestar DIAA playoffs, and a win in the semifinals will book this quickly-improving side into the CRAA DIAA regionals, joining the other Lonestar finalists, Iowa State, and Kansas in the East.
This past week’s 29-26 victory for Rice over Sam Houston State is a big statement for an Owls team that has been a bit in the rugby wilderness for a few years.
It’s been a pretty good 10 months or so for Sam Houston State.
After the Bearkats went winless through the R7CC 7s tournament in Atlanta last May, Sam Houston turned it around and won the DIAA bracket at the CRC two weeks later.
