GRR: Furman
Furman University logged a notable result Saturday in a non-conference game, as the DII program tied top DI team Indiana 41-41.
The game was a scrimmage and both teams subbed liberally, but this same meeting two years ago resulted in an 88-5 result for IU. So the improvement, following on a Furman victory over a University of South Carolina squad, is noticeable.
Usually when Furman plays UNC-Wilmington it’s a game that means a lot; often it means the Southern Conference championship.
This weekend, things are a little different. With Furman already 2-1, and UNC-W 2-0, it might actually be a game about survival.
Furman University upended DI South Carolina 22-14 this past weekend, opening up a first-half lead and holding off the Gamecocks.
Furman University won the Southern Rugby Conference championship Sunday, beating UNC-Wilmington 23-17 in the final.
Furman and UNC-W had played once before, with Furman storming back from a 31-0 deficit only to be edged at the end 48-38. But both defenses were a little tighter this time around.
In a game of great drama UNC-Wilmington wrapped up 1st in the Southern Rugby Conference South Division with a 48-38 defeat of previously-undefeated Furman.
This was a game of two halves, as UNC-W led 31-0 at the break, but with only a couple of minutes left the score was 41-38.
