College rugby in California and Arizona is moving slowly but it is moving, as several teams have enjoyed pre-season run-outs this fall.
On Saturday, Arizona State put in an impressive performance in beating Grand Canyon University 50-8. Ryan Spiwak scored three tries in a game where the Sun Devils looked in good form for so early in the season.
The Middlebury College men's rugby team was voted on by teams of the ECRC conference as the more sportsmanlike this season.

As college rugby teams do a better job of attracting more athletic players to the game, creating varsity and quasi-varsity programs, and breaking away from the old club model, it’s worth noting when an old-school club team does well.
