GRR: Arkansas State
The USA Rugby South U19 all-star program has finalized its squad to play in the Rugby Americas North (what used to be NACRA) U19 Championships.
This remembrance of Curt Huckaby, who started the rugby program at Arkansas State and was its life force for many years, was submitted by Patrick Stewart of Arkansas State Univesity.
It will be BYU and Cal once again in the Varsity Cup final, but it almost wasn't.
BYU was once again formidable, with the Whippy brothers right in the middle of the action. Josh Whippy scored two early tries and Jared Whippy converted them and added a penalty which, along with tries from Zane Mendenhall and Josh Anderson, staked BYU to a 27-8 halftime lead over Arkansas State.
Could this be the year that it all gets shaken up?
You wonder. Here in the Varsity Cup, the same four teams had been in the semifinals for the last three years. That's changed this year as Arkansas State upended Navy to get to the top four. Now, could the run of three-straight BYU v Cal finals be stopped?
It could be.
For the first time in the history of the Varsity Cup, Navy will not be in the semifinals, as Arkansas State ran out to a 24-0 halftime lead, and held off a Midshipmen surge to win the quarterfinal 31-24.
"We knew what we needed was a good defensive game plan and devotion to the defensive structure," said ASU Head Coach Shaun Potgieter. " In the first half we did that very well."
