The hot weather has finally abated in Texas and surrounding states and with the more fall-like weather the college rugby season is underway.

Three games are on the slate in the Red River Conference, with Baylor at LSU, Texas Tech at Oklahoma, and Texas A&M at Texas.

A&M is coming out of winning the Red River Conference 7s, and Head Coach James Lowery says that win is a good kick-start for the 15s season.

"I think it will translate to 15s," Lowery told Goff Rugby Report. "We were energy-driven. Energy is vital to what we do and something we need when we go after big games, but also somethingwe need to harness. We had a tough loss in the final last year and we learned a lot of lessons from that."

That last game would be the 20-15 loss to Oklahoma in the 2018-19 conference final in which the Aggies gave up a try on the final play to lose.

"We've done our best to come back from that; we want to train at a high level," said Lowrey. "We've been sharp in training, and we need to be."

This is a pretty tight conference at first glance. A&M certainly would be thought of as favorites, but there are other teams that can win on any weekend. The Baylor at LSU game gives us an early look at who might be a better contender. Although, it's still early days for a Baylor team that's undergone some changes. LSU is very tough at home.

A&M takes on a Texas team that was flat-out poor (1-7) last year, a season after coming close to winning the conference. The Longhorns have no expectations, which might be a good thing.

North Texas, which doesn't have a game this weekend, has to bounce back from some player eligibility problems, and if they do, they can cause problems.

Texas Tech struggled last year (0-8) and a visit to the Sooners isn't an easy beginning. Oklahoma returns some key players, including the guys who produced that conference game-winner last spring.
