Palmer, East, Regis Make Moves in Colorado
Regis Jesuit squeaked out a close one 17-14 over the Colorado Springs Grizzlies.
For Colorado Springs, it was a tough loss to take. Shifts in the lineup from last season have led to a lack of consistency, said Head Coach Otis McGregor. "We've march down the field in good phase play and then knock on at the five-meter line. That happen four times."
For Regis Jesuit, new Head Coach Anthony Mattachione, who moved to Regis from Jesuit-Dallas, this was a key result.
"We only have three seniors this year so with so many juniors and sophomores playing for us it's nice," said Mattachione.
One of those seniors, center Soren Heitmann, put in a solid game against the Grizzlies, and flyhalf Jack Peppercorn, Hayes Ward, and Conor Blue also stood out. They had one freshman start, Gordy McKeehan was strong. Ward scored a try early for Regis, and then was felled by a cramp. The coaches opted not to sub him out, but instead played shorthanded while Ward's cramp was attended to. He returned to the field, and scored the winning try.
Also this weekend, Monarch was upended by East HS as East handed the former DII team their first league loss in two years. The game was 0-0 at halftime, and in the second half both teams scored two converted tries, but East added two penalty goals to win 20-14.
The Palmer HS Terrors won 30-5 over Aurora. Flankers Joseph Kamara and Joe Rusert-Cuddy (also the team captain) have been excellent with a high work rate, and have sparked a nice forward effort overall.
So it's early days yet but already the Terrors are 4-0, with victories over Fort Collins, PAC, Colorado Springs, and Aurora, and East HS is 3-0 in league action. But thre are plenty of games to come.
