Life University has improved to 4-0 in the Mid-South Conference with a very convincing 81-12 victory over Clemson.
The Running Eagles got off to a quick start with tries from Harley Davidson, Zander van Schalkwyk, and freshman Ryan Rees. Clemson got a try back, but a quick-tap from emerging talent Harley Wheeler and then another try from van Schalkwyk made it 29-5 at halftime.
Life kept up the pressure, forced turnovers, and Seb Banos scored a try to make it 36-5. Carson McCraw added a try, and then Duncan van Schalkwyk set up Wheeler for another. Clemson went over for the Tigers' second, but then Wheeler raced in for his third of a stolen lineout, Freshman Matt Mairowicz made some impressive breaks and set up Mitchell Wilson and Sam Cowley for tries, while Davidson scored his second off an interception.
Cowley converted eight of the 13 tries for a personal haul of 21. Clemson drops to 1-1 on the season.
Meanwhile, Arkansas State defeated Davenport 33-19 to move to 1-1-1 in the conference. Davenport drops to 0-4.
Davenport actually led 19-12 at halftime, but freshman Calvin Gentry tied it up, and then set up Kuda Makuvire for the go-ahead score. Preston Weigel finished off what was an impressive second half for the Red Wolves.
“We had a good day,” said ASU Head Coach in a post-match statement Shaun Potgieter. “Being down at the half, we talked and made some adjustments. We reiterated what we had talked about and planned prior to the game such as holding onto the ball at contact. When we held onto the ball, we scored.”
Nick Abreus and Zach Young also touched down for Arkansas State. Brock Roper was superb for the Red Wolves and also kicked four conversions.
Six games remain in the Mid-South season, including Arkansas State v Clemson March 25.
Life is in command with a 4-0 record and two games - at Lindenwood and at Davenport - remaining in the conference schedule. LIndenwood, 1-1-1 and three games remaining, can still catch Life, but will need some help. The Lions have Clemson, Life, and Davenport on their schedule.
