Gaels Coach Unimpressed
Saint Mary's Head Coach Tim O'Brien was not supremely impressive with his team's 94-0 defeat of UC Santa Barbara in the opening game of the California Conference.
The Gaels did indeed win big, although the very pessimistic might point out that UCSB held the lion's share of territory and possession in the first quarter of the game, and it was only a couple of turnovers that led to Saint Mary's points. Certainly the Gaels committed a boatload of penalties in the first half.
"We need to examine our slow starts," said O'Brien. "And we need to example our unforced errors, or we are doomed."
The Gaels did start the game without regular flyhalf Mike McCarthy, who has been solid at that position, and instead ran out Holden Yungert in the #10 jersey. It was a shakeup that took Yungert, who has shown terrific form at scrumhalf, from his best position.
Next up for Saint Mary's is Utah Saturday in Moraga, Calif. The Utes beat Dixie State on Saturday.
