CWU Continues NCRC 7s Domination
Central Washington University won its eighth-straight Men's Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference National Qualifier title Sunday, dominating the competition as they have since the competition's inception in 2009.
"To shut out every team is a great effort and shows how well we played together today," CWU Head Coach Todd Thornley said. "Given our limited prep this was an outstanding performance by every student-athlete on the travel roster."
After shutting out Oregon, Idaho, and Oregon State Saturday, the Wildcats went back to work with a shutout over Western Washington. Cameron Marek recorded a pair of tries, while Dominic Lindstrom and Vili Toluta'u both added one for a 24-0 win.
In the semifinal against Boise State, the Wildcats exploded for six tries. Marek and Cole Zarcone each scored twice, while Scott Dean and Lindstrom added a try each in the 35-0 victory.
In the final against Western Washington, Central repeated its efforts from earlier. Lindstrom notched a pair of tries. Marek, Zarcone, and Sinclair Clinton each touched down in the 26-0 victory.
"I'm happy the guys put together two good days of rugby and we can now focus on our off season objectives and prepare for our spring season," Thornley added.
This qualifies CWU for the USA Rugby National 7s Championships. With that checked off the list, CWU now looks to prepare for their independent schedule and, later in the spring, the Varsity Cup.
