Here’s a quick rundown of the Varsity Cup games this weekend.
BYU smacked Arizona State 113-8 Saturday night to finish off the day's VC games.
Dartmouth pulled off the one big upset of the day so far, with a 30-25 defeat of Penn State. The full report is here, but Dartmouth’s front five did a superb job and Penn State got into major card trouble.
The Central Washington Wildcats clawed the UCLA Bruins 44-15 in a game that looked somewhat closer at halftime - 10-10. But with the wind at their backs the Wildcats scored three quick tries, with Dom Lindstrom getting two of them and Seth Halliman causing the Bruins all sorts of problems. A smart kicking game saw CWU home.
The Arkansas State Red Wolves got plenty of revenge for their close loss to Clemson last year, thrashing the Tigers 50-0 with two tries from Sione Fangaiuiha (who scored the first and the last of the day) and Pedro Alvarez, and single tries from Preston Weigel, Ruan Knuppel, Austin Bush, and Connor Cook.
Navy had no trouble with Notre Dame, winning 57-3. Cal had even less trouble with Texas, running out a mixed A and B group and winning 138-0. It got so Cal’s Twitter feed didn’t even list the final score.
In the other really dramatic game of the day, Utah edged Air Force 36-31. Utah had been struggling with illness through the week and certainly looked a little sluggish getting to the breakdown. Regardless, the Utes ran in two tries to lead, saw Air Force come back to tie it, took another lead only to see Air Force tie it. And then with the score deadlocked 31-31, Taylor Thomas scored with no time left to win the game. Gabe Rufflin and Chad Gough once again were heroic for Utah.
And Army got 30 points from senior Andrew Borer, who scored three tries, three conversions, and three penalty kicks, in a 55-10 defeat of Oklahoma. The Black Knights opened up an 18-0 lead in the first 20 minutes, but were held in check until right about halftime. The first 12 minutes of the second half, however, put the game out of sight for the Sooners. Logan Weiland, Torran Raby, Joseph Dlugosch, and Mitchell Sanderson also scored - Dlugosch got two.
So Goff Rugby Report’s picks for winners is so far 7-for-8, with GRR being wrong about Dartmouth v Penn State.
Next week’s Quarterfinals look to be as follows:
BYU v Dartmouth
Arkansas State v Navy
Cal v Army
Central Washington v Utah
