SD State, Cal Poly Win in California Conference
Cal Poly and San Diego State both emerged with wins this weekend in the California Conference, but both had to work for it.
Cal Poly faced a UC Santa Barbara team that has struggled to find victories this season, and battled to a 27-3 victory. Jake Heene scored three tries in the game, while Kelii Dominguez and Mickey O’Crowley also touched down. Sean Gorman got one conversion in the game.
San Diego State v Santa Clara was much closer. Santa Clara held sway for much of the game and led early.
“They are good at grinding teams with their pattern and we started slow,” said SD State Coach Alex Lichtig.
Down 20-15 in the final 15 minutes the SD State forwards powered through to set up the winning try by fullback Ari Flink to get the hard-earned 22-20 victory.
So with that, Cal Poly is now 2nd in the conference with a 2-0 record, just behind favorites St. Mary’s. SD State is 2-1 and 3rd.
