LSU, A&M Win in Red River
LSU and Texas A&M logged victories in Red River Conference play, as the Aggies improved to 1-1 and the Tigers now sit 2-0.
LSU defeated Texas 34-0, with tries from wing Aidan Elias, center Jeff Mauras, and flyhalf Cameron Troxler early on. It took a while for the Tigers to really pull away, though, and tries from scrumhalf Westley LaBorde, fullback John Domingo, and back Charles Mitchell all came in the final ten minutes.
So that puts LSU at 2-0 and sets them up nicely to face 4-0 Oklahoma next week.
Meanwhile, Texas A&M would just like to play some rugby games. They started in January, but they the time March rolls around they will have played only three matches. One of those was a competitive loss to Oklahoma, and this week the Aggies dismissed a well-regarded Baylor team 42-14.
John Schell managed the A&M offense very well, but he got lots of help as the Aggie forward pack set a very solid platform that gave him plenty of time to work.
Head Coach James Lowrey was pleased with Schell’s efforts and also those of prop Javier Davila-Lopez, who was solid in the scrums and rucks, and also made some impressive plays in the open field.
“We learned a lot from our game against Oklahoma, and we’ve been able, now to work on building from that,” said Lowrey. “We felt we left five or six tries on the field against Oklahoma. We are getting better in the red zone, and our guys just need to play more.”
A&M won’t play again in the conference until March - they have Arkansas in a non-conference game in two weeks. Still, all eyes will be on the Tigers v Sooners clash in Norman, Okla. next Saturday, which will probably decide the conference champion.
