Life Slams Clemson
Life University followed up their 119-0 defeat of South Carolina with a 76-13 defeat of Clemson Saturday in Marietta, Ga.
The Running Eagles opened up the scoring in the 1st minute, with a try from Zander Van Schalkwyk, and followed that up with a Conner Mooneyham try to make it 12-0. Alex Maughan scored thanks to a nice steal in the breakdown from Marcus Walsh.
That made it 19-0, and while Clemson replied with a try from Kevin McKeown, Mooneyham notched his second when he chased down Cody Melphy's grubber.
After some Clemson pressure, the Tigers got a penalty in front of the posts, and Nick Richards was good with the attempt for three more and a 26-8 Life lead. Clemson's defense continued to hang tough, but the speed and numbers to the ball from Life finally broke the wall, and Walsh faked a pass and slid in. Walsh then ran onto a nice feed Jared Garcia, and with sophomore Blane McIlroy hitting the conversion, it was 38-8 Life.
Mooneyham set up Melphy to end the first half with another Life try and a 45-8 scoreline.
The Texan notched his third try of the day, then, when he chased down McIlroy's kick to open the second half. The Running Eagles maul was a useful attacking platform, and it also managed to produce tries directly - Carson McCraw doing the honors to make it 55-8. Van Schalkwyk's second, and then his third made it 69-8 with two more McIlroy before Sebastian Banos crashed over for the final Life try.
Late in the game, Clemson star Tommy Rippert powered over, but Life was in control.
