Life University's women's team is set to compete in USA Rugby's women's DI in the spring, and they have also announced the recruitment of a new player in Texas-based Whitney Wilson.
“One of the things that impressed me most about Whitney when I first met her was her professionalism,” said Life Head Coach Rosalind Chou of the Kingwood, HS star. “She is so focused and determined, and she already has goals set to perform at the elite level. These are rare traits for someone of Whitney’s age.”
Beyond the rugby pitch, Chou is also impressed with Wilson’s dedication to service, saying, “Her involvement with the Best Buddies program in Texas, and the National Charity League working with the Special Olympics shows the type of character she has. One of the things we look for in our student-athletes is servant leadership, and Whitney definitely possesses that trait.”
On the rugby pitch, Wilson is a versatile and strong back, typically playing fullback or in the center positions. She also has great instincts for finding breaks in defenses, which makes her an excellent sevens player as well. In the summer of 2014, Wilson was part of the US Junior Olympic rugby sevens team that competed in China, finishing fourth.
As for choosing Life U, Wilson said, “They have such an amazing program along with an excellent coaching staff and players. It felt like family; I was welcomed with open arms. Everyone is so passionate about the game, so I felt like I fit in perfectly.” Wilson also felt a connection with the team’s focus and energy, saying, “Everyone shares the same goals and aspirations that I do, and everyone is willing to put in that extra work to be the best they can be. Words can’t describe the excitement that I feel to be part of that atmosphere.”
