The Washington Loggers rode some excellent team play to victory in the Boys bracket of the Serevi Cup 7s tournament Saturday. Led by an MVP performance from Dominic Lindstrom, the Loggers beat the Northwest Nomads 47-7, Oregon II 21-7, and Eastside 52-7 to win their pool. That set up a semifinal with Oregon II, which they won comfortably. Meanwhile, Oregon I beat Prairie 20-17, Loggers II 22-0, but lost to Rose City 7s 24-17 in pool play. Still they emerged winners over Loggers II in the semis to make the final in the main stadium at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila Wash. In the final, the Loggers continued their outstanding work in the breakdown - as in their 15s efforts they were powerful and precise, and secured solid possession without making silly turnovers. The result was that every Oregon mistake was punished, and the Loggers beat the Redhawks 45-0. Lindstrom, who plays for Kent Crusaders, said the chemistry of the team was strong. “We only had one practice but we all knew each other and things fell into place pretty quickly,” he explained. Adjusting from 15s, where they won the Great Northwest Challenge, to 7s was not difficult. The key was teamwork, which actually extended to the Loggers II team - the two teams clapped each other on and off the field all day. “It’s the most important thing about the Loggers,” Lindstrom said. “The coaches stress that we’re a family. No matter how young are or how old you are, if you’re a Loggers you’re in the Logger family. After you graduate you’re still part of that family.” Meanwhile, Oregon did very well, fielding two relatively even split squads with an eye toward developing their young players into experienced 7s practitioners. The plan worked well as over 20 players were exposed to a higher level of 7s. "The speed of the 7s game was a bit of an adjustment for us," said captain Siose Iongi, who kicked extremely well in clutch situations. "We started to play better as a team. We knew that when we played our game and didn't worry about anyone else, things worked out." The Loggers 2nd side beat Oregon II for the Plate. Eastside took the Bowl over Rose City. The Loggers won $500, and donated that check to Sig Kohl, their assistant coach who is battling cancer.
