As South Meck Wins Again, Where Are We in NC?

South Meck vs Ardrey Kell from this past weekend.

Are we clear on the top four teams in North Carolina's HS league already?

It might be a bit premature. Some teams might still be waiting for football players or wrestlers to join, so the fact that some teams have jumped out to an early running start isn't an indication (necessarily) of how the season will end.

Here are the standings right now:

NC Teir 1 W L T PF PA PD BT BL Pts
South Meck 3 0 0 97 8 89 3 0 15
Charlotte Catholic 2 0 0 70 0 70 2 0 10
Hough 2 0 0 62 5 57 2 0 10
Marvin Ridge 1 2 0 43 49 -6 1 0 5
Ardrey Kell 1 2 0 38 104 -66 1 0 5
Myers Park 0 2 0 29 68 -39 1 1 2
Corinth Holders 0 3 0 0 105 -105 0 0 0

At 3-0, defe

Now at 3-0, South Meck won comfortably 40-5 over Ardrey Kell.

South Meck saw Quinn Miller score early—Miller has been active on the scoresheet already. The lineout has been a good platform for South Meck and Miller scored off that. Jack Flemmings added a try on a penalty advantage, and then Jackson Wilson scored his first try of the season of a scrum and that platform has worked nicely for South Meck, too. Allen Diminich's try was also off a scrum.

Add to that a 60-meter breakaway for Tim Hawyes (his first try) and it was 31-0 at the halftime break

Jameson Beatty scored and converted to open the second half, and Brennan Rhodes followed on. Beatty converted and ended with 15 points (a try and five conversions) on the day. Ardrey Kell scored late to avoid the shutout.

It was, said Head Coach Rick Norvell, an excellent showing from the team both on attack and on defense

"Despite conceding one try the team [the players] showcased superior skills in lineouts, scrums, and open play."

Set piece has been very good for South Meck this year.

So all of that leads three teams unbeaten, with South Meck at 3-0, Charlotte Catholic 2-0, and Hough HS 2-0. But four teams make the semifinals, and Marvin Ridge is probably well-placed to get into that group. A hugely deep program that did, after all, win the league in 2023 and were runners-up in 2024, Ridge has the pieces in place to make a late-season surge.

In Tier 2 the Capitals lead the league after beating South Meck 2 and Providence in a close one 38-28. That was a big win, especially after Providence beat Marvin Ridge's 2nd team 14-12 (we told you Marvin Ridge is deep). Hough leads Tier 3.

The Tier 1 teams are back in action January 10.

Marvin Ridge plays Charlotte Catholic in a huge game Jan 10, 2025. They follow that up with Myers Park. Charlotte Catholic have Marvin Ridge, South Meck, and Hough in three successive weekends, which isn't exactly easy. Hough also faces South Meck January 10, followed by Ardrey Kell, and then CC.

So overall there are still some big tests for everyone. Ardrey Kell certainly has their own destiny in their hands, and so does Myers Park. South Meck has the inside track on a semifinal spot, but nothing else is certain.
