Tafuna and Parry Receive Sorensen and Scholz Trophies at Gala Event
The Washington Athletic Club hosts the WAC Rugby Awards Saturday in Seattle, with Freda Tafuna and Wyatt Parry receiving, respectively, the MA Sorensen and Rudy Scholz Awards in person.
Tafuna, who plays for Lindenwood, received the MA Sorensen Award as the best women's collegiate rugby player. As she has every year the awards dinner has been help, MA Sorensen was on hand to personally present the award.
Parry, who plays for BYU, received the Rudy Scholz as the best men's collegiate rugby player. Rudy Scholz's grandson, Doug Scholz, was on hand to personally present the trophy.
In an event MC'd by local sports media personality Mike Gastineau, author Mark Ryan, who penned For The Glory, about the 1920 and 1924 Olympic rugby events and knew Rudy Scholz personally, spoke about some of the obstacles Scholz faced in winning those two gold medals. Tara Flanagan, who was a starting lock for the USA Women's National Team when they won the Women's Rugby World Cup in 1991 (as a teammate of Sorensen's), spoke about the lessons she learned from that experience.
Both Tafuna and Parry brought huge supporters to the dinner and in fact this was the best-attended WAC Awards event ever.
