Last-Minute Try Puts Berks Past Aspetuck
Last-Minute Try Puts Berks Past Aspetuck
Berks County defeated Aspetuck 26-20 Saturday in an early non-conference tilt between the Pennsylvania and Connecticut-based HS clubs.
Both sides were missing some established starters, but that just gave other players an opprtunity to make more of an impact. This was a see-saw battle that saw six lead changes throughout the game, with the final lead change came on the last play of the game.
Aspetuck was led by center, Jason Champagne, who had a pair of tries on the day, and was a threat every time he had ball in hand. The Aspetuck forwards played strong possession rugby and relentless defense all through the game.
Berks was led in the forwards by Christian Davila, Jaime Rivera, Ulices Ramirez, and Charles Joof. The backs were guided by flyhalf, Matt Cleland, who controlled the attack through the hands and with his boots. Berks captain, Baylor Kobularcik, led the team from the front with ferocious defense and hard running.
Davila, Ramirez, and Rivera all scored tries for Aspetuck.
As time wound down Aspetuck led 20-19. That was when center Ryan Roman crashed through for Berks and touched down for the go-ahead score. Chris Cleland slotted his third conversion of the day to make it 26-20, and that was it.
Both teams expect to get stronger as key playmakers return.
