Three Stay Unbeaten in SCIRF League

Colin Duffy scores for St. Augustine.

St. Augustine, Cathedral Catholic, and Fallbrook are all atop the SCIRF league now after all three won over the weekend.

Led by a solid effort from prop Gabe Mendoza and with fullback George Aquilar showing plenty of skill, Fallbrook beat Warren HS 57-12 to move to 3-0 in the league, which is the best record because the other two teams have only played twice.

That scoreline was impressive, but Warren can take solace in being the first team to score twice against Fallbrook.

Cathedral moved on to 2-0 with a convincing 56-7 victory over Mira Costa. It was an impressive showing for Cathedral as Mira Costa had started 2-0. While Mira Costa Head Coach Duke Dulgarian had been realistic about his team's start—he was happy but recognized the top contenders still awaited—the result was also an indication of Cathedral's strength.

Cathedral Head Coach Glenn Irvine called it simply a "great team effort across the board."

As for St. Augustine, they came off a slightly longer break than most to defeat Servite 78-12.

Servite's program is coming back after COVID shut them down in 2021 and 2022. They put it to the Saints in the opening quarter of the game and it was 14-7 St. Augustine after 15 minutes. Slowly, though, the more experienced St. Augustine team started to pull away, scoring two converted tries to take a 28-7 lead into halftime.

The Servite Friars started to tire as the game wore on and the Saints pulled away.

Jake Russon was named Man of the Match while captain and No. 8 Aiden Kemp was an attacking threat all day and scored five tries. Colin Duffy, Lucca Rohrer, and Sam Johns also contributed heavily—they and Kemp are all seniors. But there's a youth movement afoot, also.

"We have 20 freshmen who have joined rugby this season," said Head Coach Eric Dent. "We are very excited about the interest from the younger boys. They will be the future of the program. It's very exciting."
