Storer Classic Set for Mid-January
Storer Classic Set for Mid-January
The West Coast 15s calendar gets a bit of a kick-start as it always does Mid-January with the Dennis Storer Classic.
UCLA hosts the tournament, named after the late Hall of Fame coach of both UCLA and the USA national team, and it is an unofficial kickoff for many of the teams involved.
Eight men's college teams are in on the action January 14-15 in a series of shortened games that ensure teams get playing time and also some coaching time within the competition.
Hosts UCLA will be there, of course, as will Cal, the perennial winners of the event. Also there will be UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, Cal Poly SLO, Loyola Marymount, and, from out of state, the University of Utah.
This means three of the four PAC Conference teams will be at the tournament. But also of note is UCSC, which is joining DIAA in the California Conference this season, where UCSB and Cal Poly compete.
High School Bracket
There is also a robust boys high school tournament at the Storer Classic, with ten teams involved. Most of the teams are from Southern California, including Thunder Rugby (2021 HS Club National Champions and 2022 National HS Tier II Champs), SOC Raptors (6th in 2022 HS Club National Championships, Belmont Shore (2022 HS Club National Championships Runners-up). Santa Monica, and a new program out of Orange Lutheran HS will also be there.
From outside the region, Marin, Danville, and Mother Lode all come in from Northern California. And from even further afield, Olympus HS and Te Mana Rugby, both out of Utah, will play.
