New Mexico Tech Lands New Head Coach
SOCORRO, NM – An experienced educator, rugby player, and coach started work today, Aug. 8, 2022, as the leader of the New Mexico Tech Miners Men’s Rugby Team.
Christopher P. Hathaway, who most recently served as an assistant rugby coach at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich., will lead a program that won the Small College Division Championship at the the National Collegiate Rugby 7s Tournament in New Orleans in May.
The Miners competed in two postseasons in the 2021-2022 season, making NCR's Small College final in the fall, losing 34-29 to Christendom in the final. They then played in the American College Rugby 15s DIII Championship in the spring, beating University of Denver in the final.
All of those finals appearances were under Gearoid Dunbar, who has since taken a position with Mary Washington.
Hathaway earned a bachelor of business administration degree, emphasis in sport management, from Davenport in 2013, and a master of arts in teaching degree, with an emphasis in elementary mathematics, from Relay Graduate School of Education in Denver, Colo. in 2019. He taught in the Denver and Aurora, Colo. public schools.
Hathaway has coached men’s and women’s rugby teams at the collegiate, high school, and youth league levels in Michigan and Colorado. He also coached men and women at the senior level, including the Davenport team that made the top four in the R7CC Gold Division in Atlanta.
He also worked with the Davenport women's team that won the R7CC Red Division. In addition, Hathaway played for Davenport in their inaugural season in 2009 and was part of the team that won DIAA titles in 2011 and 2012.
Under Hathaway New Mexico Tech Men’s Rugby starts its season Sept. 3 in a match against University of Texas at El Paso. The team’s first home game will be Oct. 1.
