Marist Men Win Tri-State 7s
Marist defeated Hofstra to win the Tri State Conference Men's 7s Championship Sunday, making it a 15s-7s conference double for Marist.
Hofstra made the final with a 31-0 defeat of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the semifinals, while Marist held off Fairfield 30-19 to make the championship game. The Fairfield team entered into this tournament was their development side.
Marist, Fairfield, Hofstra, and RPI all cone their pool while Seton Hall, Caldwell, Vassar, and Drew were pool runners-up and moved on to the quarterfinals.
Hofstra, led by Aidan Woods and Karl Verastedui, were very impressive all day, and controlled their pool. Fairfield, with Kevin Splan having a big day, played well all day and was in serious consideration for a place in the final. Led by the play of Jack Farrar, RPI got better as the day wore on and won a very tight game with Vassar to take that pool before beating Seton Hall in the quarters. Marist overcame a serious injury to one of their players in the first game that brought an ambulance on the field.
"We were shaken up for sure and had to discuss whether we should push on but the kids decided to keep playing," said Head Coach James Kimberly.
Federico Gubana led the team all day, scoring three tries in the semis to spark a comeback, and leading the tournament in points. Marist captain Enrique Pesantez played the most minutes and worked through some knocks and briuses to pitch-up for the final.
"He was really a rock for us and a true warrior," said Kimberly. Alber Severini received notice for his stout defense and clutch scoring.
Marist now has an opportunity to move on to the NCR College 7s in New Orleans over Memorial Day Weekend.
