De La Salle Downs Mother Lode
De La Salle, the #2-ranked school team in GRR's rankings, pulled off a nicely-taken win in Northern California this past weekend, handling Mother Lode despite being without a few regular starters.
Injuries have hit De La Salle a bit but Head Coach Derek Holmberg said he was confident with the team he took to paly Mother Lode.
"We have been hit with an awful injury bug this season," said Holmberg. That bug hit in the All-California school final and had continued.
De La Salle started well against Mother Lode and some expansive play saw Hayden Bullota taking a skip pass and run in for a try. Shortly after Matt Abbes broke through and offloaded to Nate Vaderklught for DLS's second try. Later in the half Michael Freeman caught up to his own chip kick and kicked it again into in-goal where he pounced on it for a score.
The forwards could move the ball too and a series of offloads led to a Sam Carlson try and the first half ended with De La Salle up 24-0.
The second half was more of a back-and-forth battle with both sides playing tough around the breakdown.
De La Salle and Mother Lode both scored twice and the game ended 34-14 for De La Salle.
Freeman had a strong game for De La Salle at flyhalf, while lock Dennis White and Abbes at No. 8 set the tone up front.
