Louisiana HS Final on Horizon
Jesuit New Orleans is into the Rugby Louisiana final after beating St. Paul Saturday, while Brother Martin defeated Bayou Hurricanes to set up a semifinal between Brother Martin and St. Paul.
Jesuit has been in good form all season and defeated St. Paul 34-21 even as they rested some regular starters.
Nick Ferina, normally the team's outside center, started at flyhalf in place of Andrew Newel and had a strong game. Scrumhalf Matt Cashio patrolled his normal position of scrumhalf and took over the goalkicking duties. He scored nine points on kicks and, no surprise at this point in the season, scored on a quick snipe around the ruck.
Meanwhile, Brother Martin his their stride with an impressive 60-12 defeat of the Hurricanes. Plagued by penalties, defenses lapses, and other mistakes at key moments of other games, Brother Martin eliminated those errors this time around.
The scoring started with Brother Martin running a weakside move off a scrum. The forwards consolidated and hooker Brady Goodlet picked up and was over for a 5-0 lead. Brother Martin worked down the field and prop Gage Usey took a quick tap from a penalty and bulled his way over. Tyler Anclade made the tough conversion to mak it 12-0. Anclade then dummied a switch to his inside center and raced in, converting that try.
Bayou came storming back and scored to close the gap, but Brother Martin kept going. Another weakside move off a scrum set up outside center Anton Brown to touch down. Sam Graffeo scored next, getting a nice offload from James Clark, and while Bayoud replied with their second, yet another weakside scrum move set up Brother Martin wing Branson Perez.
Brother Martin rolled from there. Brown ended up with five tries on the day, and Brother Martin pulled away to win 60-12.
Brother Martin will now face St Paul on Tuesday for the right go the state final against Jesuit New Orleans.
