New Orleans Jesuit Backline Sparks Win Over Dallas Jesuit
New Orleans Jesuit put down quite the marker over the weekend, beating Dallas Jesuit in Texas.
Dallas was blooding some new talent but had experience and would have been expecting to put in a closer effort in this game, of not a win. The Rangers got tries from Jodan Mason and Neil Lancaster but New Orleans won big 47-10.
New Orleans, meanwhile, has to be happy. Junior flyhalf Andrew Newel was excellent on the day, working the tactical kicks to keep Dallas Jesuit pinned in their own end, and landing six from seven conversions, several of which were from a tough angle.
One or Newel's kicks resulted in a long-range try for wing Tyson Oliver, who chased the kick down from inside the NOLA Jesuit half to score.
Newel's efforts were also evident on defense as he was quick over the ball in rucks, poaching possession four times and getting holding-on penalties on two other occasions.
Scrumhalf Matt Cashio kept the Blue Jay attack on the front foot with sharp passes to the Blue Jay forwards and when the defenders keyed on those forwards it was Cashio who would scamper through for yardage—sometimes a lot of yardage. On one chance he burst through for 40 meters and a try.
Fullback Nate Williams and center Nick Ferina worked the outside channels nicely and worked together with some silky passing. On one play Ferina executed a flick pass against the edge defender which unlocked Williams to score down the tramlines. And when the reserves came in they were strong, too. Prop Josh Barazza provided a late-game spark with some blistering runs and was hugely effective in loose player.
All of that put New Orleans Jesuit in a confident mood going into the league opener against Brother Martin on Saturday. Dallas Jesuit, meanwhile, has two weeks to work on some issues before opening up their in-state season against St. Thomas in Houston.
