Big Win for Torrey Pines in SoCal
Torrey Pines defeated San Clemente HS in emphatic fashion Saturday in Southern California Youth Rugby single-school competition.
Fullback Riley Elliott returned from a shoulder injury that had sidelined him for months and scored three tries, all of which he converted, in the first 15 minutes. Newcomer flyhalf Jonty Lee worked well with Elliott—who had been the previous #10—and set up his fullback all day long.
With Torrey Pines able to bring several players to the fore in terms of kicking from the hand, San Clemente was under constant pressure from kicks to space. San Clemente was pinned in their own end for much of the first half, and so whenever they made a mistake, Torrey Pines was able to punish them.
The result was an astounding 40-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, San Clemente ramped up the physicality and worked their forwards more successfully. They scored a try and Torrey Pines scored two in a much closer game, but the Torrey Pines lead was far too much.
Elliott ended up with 32 points.
"Getting Riley back comes just in time as we kick off league play," said Torrey Pines Head Coach Matty Sandoval. "We;ve been blessed at Torrey with good playmakers in the past, but having two of [Elliott's and Lee's] caliber at the same time is something to behold. They're fun to watch."
