USA Men Win Opener in Cape Town
The Men's Eagles 7s team started the Cape Town 7s with a 38-5 defeat of Uganda.
This was what fans should expect from the USA team. They struck quickly and kept it up—their approach was simple but executed well and they were in complete control of the game from the start.
Lucas Lacamp was set up for a run around the outside and he added a second breaking a couple of tackles.
Some good ball handling found Malachi Esdale out wide, and then Lacamp burst through for his third of the first half.
Head Coach Mike Friday replaced Lacamp with Perry Baker which was almost amusing in its cruelty. Seconds into the second half the Eagles ran it through the hands and found Baker out wide who didn't have to get out of second gear to score.
Esdale finished it all off.
The player of the game was probably Joe Schroeder. Every aspect of securing and presenting possession ran through him. He produced two key plays, chasing down a kick through and securing it for his teammates to use, and also going after a restart that was going to land in touch and volleyball-bumping it back over his head to set up Esdale's try.
The tries were nice. The passing was nice. Schroeder's work on the little things were nice, too.
Next up for the USA team is Great Britain, which upset Australia, and then those Australians. Attention to detail will be very important.
