Underappreciated LSU Keeps Winning
LSU seems poised to win the Red River Conference and vault into the DIA playoffs.
All the Tigers need to do is run the rest of the conference table, which includes Texas A&M this weekend, and Baylor April 2. But since LSU has already defeated Oklahoma, the Tigers are expected to continue to win.
This past Saturday, it was business as usual against Texas Tech, 91-5. Head Coach Bob Causey says his team is a special group.
“They come to listen,” he told Goff Rugby Report. “They’re starting to believe in themselves, and they have the right attitude. One of the things I’ve picked up playing in this conference is that a lot of the teams have the same athletes. It’s how those athletes go about their business that makes a difference.”
Causey points to the fact that despite it being obvious that the Tigers were going to win, the players didn’t let their discipline or expectations slide. They had trouble with their scrums early, so the tight five came together to nail down that aspect of play. Players continued to play unselfishly, and continued to work hard to play to their pattern.
“All across the board, guys went about their business,” said Causey. “There was none of that ‘hey. it’s my turn to get a try.’ It could have gotten real scrappy real fast, and it didn’t.”
Prop Christian Brower, who scored two tries on the day, agreed.
“It takes a lot of discipline to stay on the game plan and not just go for the tryline,” said Brower. “We’re holding ourselves to a standard.”
The results speak for themselves - 52-7 over TCU, 34-0 over Texas, an astounding 43-12 over Oklahoma, and now the blowout of Texas Tech.
What does this mean for LSU going forward? They need the rankings to fall in their favor now. In last week’s DIA Rankings, the Tigers were ranked #13. It’s a bit of a shocking position for them to be in, considering they’ve also defeated Arkansas and Alabama by significant margins. You get the feeling they’re thinking “what more do we have to do?”
(GRR ranks LSU #16, but the GRR rankings include teams in Varsity Cup and DIAA. Among only DIA teams GRR ranks LSU 9th.)
Maybe they just need to make sure everyone knows.
When the D1A Rugby Top 20 comes out Wednesday, expect LSU to be higher (we at GRR voted for them to be higher, anyway). And even if they aren’t, that’s OK.
“We’ve got a bit of a chip on our shoulder,” said Brower. “We know we’re a good team, and we want to make a statement.”
