Staples, Aspetuck Tie
Staples, Aspetuck Tie
In a game between two highly-ranked teams in Connecticut, Staples HS (ranked #5 among school teams) tied Aspetuck (ranked #10 among HS clubs) on Friday night.
In a physical, spirited match, Staples did well to contains a very dangerous set of Aspetuck backs and some powerful forwards.
It was a constant battle to find space for both teams, with the second half, especially, highlighted by some excellent tackling technique. Staples was good at rolling through the phases but were hit with penalties at critical moments, and only got the one try, from center Tanner Connors. Aspetuck answered that try with two of their own in the first half and led 12-7 at the break. Early in the second half Staples flanker Luke Rosen went over to tie the game at 12-12. It stayed that way.
Both sides ran multiple phases only to be ultimately stopped by the other. Late in the game Aspetuck had one more shot and threatened the Staples line. But a knock-on gave possession to Staples. They, in turn, marched down to the other end of the field and got cloe to the Aspetuck tryline. But Aspetuck's defense held firm, and that ended the game.
Aspetuck Head Coach Ray Weiner wasn't thrilled with the result.
"We need to get back to basics," he said.
Both teams played well defensively and it took a team effort for Staples. Captains and George Engels (lock) and Nick Novello (No. 8) stood strong, while flankers Rosen and Noah Frass racked up huge tackle counts. Connors helped contain the Aspetuck backs out wide.
