South Meck Rolls On in North Carolina
South Mecklenburg remains atop the North Carolina school league after a convincing 45-10 defeat of Providence Friday night.
(All NC games are officially limited to a 35-point winning margin; this allows teams to ring the changes and get more playing time for more players, so the official score here is 45-10.)
South Meck was led by Jack Flemmings who scored three tries, while Brennan Rhodes was a force on defense, making 14 solo tackles (perhaps more).
The support running of Rhodes was also on point.
Jamison Beatty added three tries of his own, including one off a kick-receipt in which he raced 80 meters.
All three were hugely influential in the game, but Rhodes with his work rate and consistency throughout the match, might have been the star of all of them.
Also on Friday night, Sun Valley defeated Charlotte Catholic 24-13. This fixture was delayed from December and probably just as well for new program Sun Valley, as they probably needed a touch more time to prepare.
Regardless, Sun Valley improves to 1-1, having logged a very creditable 25-22 loss to Myers Park before the Christmas break. Bolstered by some players with some rugby experience as well as enthusiastic student-athletes new to the game, Sun Valley is one to watch going forward.
