Siena Defeats Iona in High-Scoring Midweek Matchup
Siena defeated Iona Wednesday night in a make-up of a game that was canceled due to lightning back in September.
Iona went into the game 3-1 with Siena at 4-0.
Siena's offense was firing and they ran out to a 41-21 lead at halftime.
The team teams each scored two tries in the second half to cap it off, but in the end Siena won in a big-scoring game 55-33.
Siena's flyhalf and goalkicker Isaac Frost was perfect from the kicking tee, slotting all seven conversions he attempted and adding two penalty goals. Team Rugby Coordinator Greg Matthew said Siena's performance was a big improvement over last week's victory over Nazareth.
"We got off to a good start offensively and applied pressure," said Mathew. "At times we played smart rugby in the right areas of the field which counted toward having the overall control in the game."
Along with Frost, junior hooker Rupert Bronkhorst was very solid for Siena, and freshman lock Harvey Hogan also helped set the tone.
As a result of this game, Siena improves to 5-0 while Iona drops their second result in a row (they lost to Brown this past weekend) to now sit at 3-2. Both teams have games on Saturday, with Siena taking on Fordham and Iona playing Nazareth.
