Seedings-Affecting Games; What Happened?
Seedings-Affecting Games; What Happened?
Last week we at GRR posted a video talking about high school boys games that had an effect on Boys HS National Championships seedings, now's the time to see how it all shook down.
Here's the video.
First-off we should have included the Staples vs Xavier game, because that is a direct apples-vs-apples comparison of two school teams that will be going to nationals. Staples beat Xavier, and have already beaten Greenwich. The third piece of this puzzle is the coming weekend when Greenwich plays Xavier.
Now the other five:
#5 KC Jr. Blues vs SLUH.
KC won this, but it was a close one, 21-17. As a result we're not sue this result makes that much of a difference. It could be enough to bump KC to the top tier in HS Club, and certainly is sufficient to make the Blues a higher Tier 2 seed, but as far as SLUH is concerned, what the result does is give seeders the flexibility to put SLUH almost anywhere they want. SLUH is almost certainly a 5th through 8th seed among school teams, but which one?
#4 Fort Hunt vs West End
Fort Hunt won in a shutout. This just bolsters their claim that they are among the higher-level clubs. The things is, there are a lot of them. This probably gets Fort Hunt into the top four, although it's worth noting that it's really top 5. If you're seeded 5th, you're playing #4, and vice versa—there's very little difference between the two. (West end is not going to nationals so their status isn't discussed here.)
#3 St. Thomas Aquinas vs Eagan
STA won easily. Eagan isn't going to nationals. So this is really about whether STA is a #3 or a #4 seed. In the end the game doesn't tell us a lot.
#2 Raleigh Redhawks vs Jacksonville
Raleigh beat both Jacksonville and the Florida Jaguares, but clearly not by as much as Charlotte. The result ensures Charlotte's status, and probably has Raleigh as a lower-seed Tier 1 or a higher-seed Tier 2 team.
#1 Gonzaga vs St. Ignatius
This was indeed a big one, and Ignatius looked very good in winning. Gonzaga didn't look bad at all. The result really confirms Ignatius as a #2 seed and arguably a #1, but with Gonzaga ... they lost, yes, but in a game that was 24-21 well into the second half. They could be a #3.
